The first Sunday in June marks the 30th annual National Cancer Survivors Day®, a day dedicated to celebrating cancer survivors and supporters while raising awareness of the challenges faced by cancer. At Gateway, we honor cancer survivors every day. However, throughout the month of June, we are celebrating all the Heroes Among Us by amplifying patient voice to highlight the importance of clinical trials in conquering cancer.
Meet Our Hero, Maddy Oliver
![]() |
At the age of 17, Maddy was diagnosed with an aggressive bone cancer called osteosarcoma. The cancer not only could have taken her leg, but also her life. Sadly, Maddy’s passion for dancing had to be put on hold. For four months, she was bedridden while undergoing intense treatment. Then, Maddy’s family learned of a Gateway-funded clinical trial that ultimately saved her life while preserving her quality of life. Today, Maddy is a college student and is once again enjoying her true passion, dancing. See Maddy’s inspiring story here.
Gateway Has Moved Over 150 Trials from Lab to the Patient’s Bedside
As Gateway leads the way to better treatments and more cures for all types of cancer, we recognize that the transition from laboratory success to clinical trials has become so challenging that some have dubbed it the “valley of death.” According to The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) 2017 State of Cancer Care in America, 85% of early clinical trials for novel drugs fail, despite successful pre-clinical testing - while only half of new agents that move to Phase III trials get approved for clinical use.
The good news is that, thanks to donors like you, Gateway has been able to fund over 150 research projects investigating next-generation cancer treatments that lessen the burden of traditional chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery. 70 percent of those trials progressed to the next phase of research. And nearly half of the trials would not have proceeded without Gateway’s support.
