As the end of year approaches, a donation to Gateway is an easy way to make a significant impact in the lives of cancer patients – TODAY. And, because Gateway is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, when you make your gift before December 31, you also increase your tax-deductible charitable donations for 2015.

Message from the President

Please take a few moments to view this important message from Teresa Hall Bartels, President of Gateway for Cancer Research.

Happy Holidays from Teresa Hall Bartels
“What if we can cure most cancer and manage the rest as a chronic disease, similar to diabetes? Every year, over 1.5 million individuals receive a cancer diagnosis. Because of research, today 2/3 of them can expect to survive. However, more than half a million die from their disease each year. That’s far too many.” –Teresa Hall Bartels

25 Years of Moving Cancer Research Forward

Over the past 25 years, Gateway has provided millions of dollars of funding for more than 140 clinical trials in all types of cancer. Here are just some of our many achievements to date:

  • Gateway was one of the funders of the early research that led to the development of Herceptin – a targeted therapy for HER2 positive metastatic breast cancer.

  • Researchers funded by Gateway demonstrated the safety and ability of a new breast cancer vaccine to stimulate the immune system to destroy hidden cancer cells. Patients experienced virtually no side effects and significantly high survival rates over longer periods of time.

  • A recent Gateway funded pediatric clinical trial has potentially saved the lives of seven children with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). Children with AML typically experience high relapse rates because as their cancer progresses, specific genes are suppressed therefore they become less responsive to treatment.

  • A Gateway-funded clinical trial is investigating the use of a drug to aid in the surgical removal of brain cancer in children. "Tumor Paint" helps identify cancer sites for improved removal of tumors while decreasing the risk of removing precious healthy brain tissue. This "molecular flashlight" has the potential to revolutionize surgical oncology.

Greater Impact via Collaboration

Currently, Gateway is funding 51 clinical trials throughout the U.S. at nearly all the major cancer centers, as well as in Israel, Canada, Switzerland, Spain and the U.K.

We’re also partnering with CureSearch to co-fund 13 pediatric clinical trials in community hospitals around the country.

By leveraging the investments, expertise, and knowledge base of a wider spectrum of academic and industry experts, Gateway enables a larger scale of impact than any one foundation can accomplish alone.

99 cents of Every Dollar Received Funds Cancer Clinical Trials!

Nearly everyone has been impacted by cancer in one way or another. Gateway is working every day to make sure your donations are truly investments in research with real people -- making a difference both now and for the future.

And because our expenses are underwritten, 99 cents of every dollar contributed to Gateway is available to fund cancer clinical trials. It’s a great return on your investment.

You can help us to shape that world in which a cancer diagnosis is no longer feared. As you make decisions about your end of year giving, please consider making a tax-deductible donation to Gateway, TODAY.
